ALCOHOL EDUCATION CLASSES
If you're charged with a First Offender OUI offense, you can reduce your sentence by agreeing to complete a state-approved Driver Alcohol Education Program (DAEP).
The program, run by state-approved outside providers and groups, consists of an intake assessment, up to 40 hours of meetings over four months, exposure to self-help groups through attending meetings in your community, and a victim-impact presentation with speakers from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).
WARNING - There Are Stiff Penalties For Those Who Fail to Complete the Program!
Once you've been given back your right to drive, if you fail to complete the program, the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) will again suspend your driver's license, and even recommend jail sentences.
The cost of the program - paid by the participant - is approximately $600.
Repeat Offenders have other alcohol-related treatment programs through the Commonwealth. These are two-week, inpatient programs that typically cost $1,000.
In most cases, participants are referred by the District Court (or Boston Municipal Court) with which they are on probation.
Those who do not choose to attend these classes risk having a longer license suspension period, heavier fines and possible incarceration.
